							“Teaching Racing Starts”Learn more.
 With the start of a
new season, many new young swimmers will begin
competitive swimming.  To help keep these young
swimmers safe, new rules have been put in place by
USA-Swimming concerning teaching racing starts.  To
avoid risk of serious injury, no swimmer who has not
been properly trained should attempt to perform a
racing start, from either a starting block or the
side of the pool, into less than six feet of water.

							| “So
You Are Going to Be A Marshal At An Upcoming Meet”
							 Thank
you for serving as a Marshal in an upcoming swim
meet.  USA Swimming and Virginia Swimming,
Inc., hold the safety of their swimmers as a top
priority at any swim meet.  You, as Marshal,
are the primary enforcer of safety rules in the
							swimming pool area.

							| “We
Don’t Swim In Your Toilet – Please Don’t Pee In Our
							Pool”

This was a popular sign displayed at
many pools in the 1970’s and 80’s.  What
happened to that message?  It needs to come
back, stronger than ever with the advent of
municipalities going to chloramination of drinking
water rather than chlorination.  To make a very
long explanation short, it is not chlorine that
makes the pool air smell bad, it is chloramines.  Learn
more about this important problem and how you can
make the pool air better! |

							| “Dealing With An Unusual Situation At
							A Swim Meet”
As Marshal, strutting around the swimming pool venue
in your gaudy vest, you may be approached by a
swimmer who informs you that an adult had been
staring at her (swimmer could of course be either
gender) for a long time and had actually followed
her to the locker room door. The swimmer states that
she is afraid of this adult stranger on the deck.
As Marshal, what do you do?

"Safe Driving – A Forgotten Part of Aquatic
Safety" Swimming safety really starts when the athlete
leaves the house and should be in effect until the
swimmer arrives home.  Automobile accidents are
a major cause of injury and death for teenagers.Learn more about

							"Staying Hydrated a Must"

With the summer LC season now in full swing, we need
to remember several things about dehydration and
proper hydration.  Staying properly hydrated is
a must at practices or meets.
However, dehydration can occur in the winter as well as in the
							summer.  It is often

associated with very hot, outside heat, but may occur in indoor
venues in the middle of winter, as well.

							dehydration and prevention. |
